ABOUT THE ARTIST

Historian of philosophy and visual artist based in Poland, known for unique contemporary textile art. Her distinctive, original tapestries constitute a combination of traditional weaving techniques with innovative use of electric cables, paper, clothing items, leather and other raw materials. The original technical solutions and manful choice of themes were distinguished within the Competition MUZA 2015 – Magdalena Abakanowicz (2015) , V National Art Competition (2015) and the Tapestry of the Year Competition (2015) . The works found their way to the collection of Cardinal Stefan Wyszyński (collections of the Institute of Primate’s Chapel in Choszczówka, near Warsaw, Poland). Read more >>

• Wątki istotne – tkaniny Marii Węgrzyniak – Szczepkowskiej

Wątki istotne – to tytuł wystawy, rozpoczynającej się 9 maja 2019 r, trwającej także podczas Nocy Muzeów 2019. Pierwszy raz w galerii zostaną zaprezentowane gobeliny, dużych formatów, nasycone doświadczeniem i filozofia Autorki prac. Przyglądając się tkaninom Marii Węgrzyniak – Szczepkowskiej odnosi się wrażenie, że powstają z materiałów porzuconych, nieprzydatnych lub znalezionych na wysypisku życia. Ich ilość i to gdzie je znajduje często świadczą o kondycji współczesnego człowieka. Obserwacja codzienności prowokuje i nasuwa tematy, z którymi Artystka mierzy się przy krosnach. Przedmioty codziennego użytku, będące częścią dzieła, są „drogowskazami”, dla widza, a „wątkami istotnymi” dla Artystki.

Tapestry

PAST & PRESENT

Tapestry is a form of textile art, traditionally woven on a vertical loom. Tapestry is weft-faced weaving, in which all the warp threads are hidden in the completed work, unlike cloth weaving where both the warp and the weft threads may be visible. In tapestry weaving, weft yarns are typically discontinuous; the artisan interlaces each coloured weft back and forth in its own small pattern area. It is a plain weft-faced weave having weft threads of different colours worked over portions of the warp to form the design. Most weavers use a natural warp thread, such as linen or cotton. The weft threads are usually wool or cotton, but may include silk, gold, silver, or other alternatives. Read more >>
